THE JOHN HUNTER MEMORIAL RIDE
September 19, 2021
Nicholl’s Oval Pavilion
725 Armour Road
Peterborough
Registration opens Thursday, September 9 and
closes noon on Tuesday, September 14.
As many of you know, we lost a great member, mentor and friend this summer with the passing of John Hunter. There are few who met John or enjoyed his company on a ride who have not come away with a treasured memory, be it a riding tip, a helping hand, a little encouragement (HTFU… and perhaps remembered more fondly in hindsight!), or just a great story.
On September 19, the Peterborough Cycling Club invites you to join us for the John Hunter Memorial Ride, a celebration of life and the ride that defined John’s time with us.
3 routes will be available, a 47km, a 60km, and a 100km, with all departing from Nicholl’s Oval in the first half of the morning. Roll-out times are listed in the ride details further down the page. Cyclists can ride the routes on their own, or head out in the company of one of our Ride Leaders. All routes will return to the Nicholl’s Oval Pavilion for a post-ride BBQ.
There is no cost to take part, and PCC membership is not required. However, all participants must register by Tuesday, September 14 at noon via the Cycle Club app. Participants must also complete the waiver included in the registration process. Riders without completed waivers will NOT be permitted to participate.
ROUTES
This route is a classic and one that John rode often including his last ride so it will take you past the location of the accident. If you would like to stop and take a few moments to remember him that is welcome.
It is generally flat with some rolling hills. There are a number of shortcuts to save a few K if you need to, but once you hit Hwy 40 you are committed to at least 85 K.
Details
We would not consider this a standard John Hunter route, it is on roads he traveled often as part of other routes. It has a bit of everything. The map shows more gravel than there is. The route is 60.65K and should take about 2-2.5 hrs. The sections through Bridgenorth and Lakefield will slow things down.
Details
There is also a shorter version of the above route which will bring it down to about 47K. After you leave Bridgenorth on 7th line, just keep going straight at Centre line and take a left onto Buckhorn Road, then turn right when you reach 8th line and head into Lakefield.
