Sunday April 22nd was the long awaited wrap-up to the PCC Spring Classics pool. For the preceding 3 weeks a group of rabid cycling fans had been picking their dream teams of 9 riders competing in the 5 big classic races of April – Tour of Flanders, Paris Roubaix, Amstel Gold, La Fleche Wallonne and finally Liege-Bastogne-Liege. After 3 gruelling weeks of predictions and 4 exciting races, 25 teams had it all on the line and the race for the pool title was tight. Wayne Smith held a commanding lead after two races but it started to tighten up after Amstel Gold with only 5 points separating Lucas Bent, Wayne Smith and Kris Lew. Wayne finally cracked during La Fleche Wallonne and it was a 2-man race going into the finale with Lucas and Kris separated by a single point. Our own Scott Wood graciously offered the use of the Ritz Deli North for the race finale where 30+ club members (and offspring) descended for an authentic Belgian waffle breakfast (served by an authentic Belgian) during a live broadcast of Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

Kieran and Scott W were serving espressos as fast as the machine would crank them out, the waffles were flying, Zac and Kim were doing dishes like there was no tomorrow and everyone was having a great time in the packed house. In addition to the food there were some great prizes donated by our sponsors Plush (a pair of Levis cycling jeans!), Shimano, St. Veronus, and Wild Rock Outfitters. At the end of the day Maxim Iglinsky won a stunning race (and was not picked by a single person) and the PCC pool title was awarded to Kris Lew who overtook Lucas by a single point. Dave Breukelaar mirrored Iglinsky with a late surge from out of nowhere to take 3rd place overall. It was great to see so many members (and some first timers) out to enjoy the event. I don’t know about you but we can’t wait for the Tour de France pool in July!

Weather permitting, the Saturday Leisure Rec Ride will begin on Saturday April 21st. We’ll meet at the Silver Bean and go over a few pointers/reminders about group riding and then head out shortly after 2 PM. On the 21st, we should be back in town by 4:15 PM. The route, yet to be finalized, for the first ride of the season will be relatively flat, no more than 40-ish km or about 90 minutes saddle time.

If it’s raining, no ride this week. If it’s simply cool, dress appropriately in layers.

This ride will attract people who enjoy the Monday/Wednesday Rec/Leisure rides but are looking for a longer ride and as an alternative to the Saturday morning Women’s Rec Ride. The distances for the Saturday afternoon ride will increase relatively quickly and hills will be introduced sooner rather than later. And you guessed it, the average speed of each ride will creep up. Last year the group ended up doing a 75 km ride at 25+ kph, a goal this year before the end of May. Once the warm weather hits, you’ll initially need to put aside 3 hours for this ride. At the peak of the season, expect to be doing a series of nice 100 km+ routes. At that point you’ll need to put aside 4.5 - 5.0 hours per ride. Be sure to have your 2012 PCC membership; the rides are for PCC members only.

Another new offering by the PCC for 2012 is the Senior Youth Competitive Road Cycling Program. This program is designed to give area high school-aged kids the opportunity to learn and experience competitive cycling. Emphasis will be placed on developing skills related to road bike racing including: safety, basic competence (like strength, fitness and bike handling), training, tactics, teamwork, sprinting, breaking away, time-trialing, group riding and basic bike maintenance. We also hope to foster an enduring appreciation and love for the sport based on having fun. The program will be centred around Saturday morning rides, and alternating Tuesday night intervals and time-trialing. We hope to add in some intra-club crits and day camps.

City of Peterborough
Media Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 28, 2012
Peterborough, ON –
Update: Canadian Pacific Railway Bridge, Otonabee River Crossing

The City of Peterborough has retained Sanchez Engineering Inc. to undertake a structural engineering assessment and complete a preliminary design with a cost estimate for the public walkway on the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) Bridge over the Otonabee River between Edgewater Boulevard and George Street.

With the involvement of City and CPR staff, the engineering firm will determine if it is feasible to continue to attach a walkway, preferably with a wider surface, to the bridge by examining the bridge’s structure and performing load calculations. CPR’s approval of the design approach will be necessary before the design and cost estimate can be completed.

City staff are working closely with Sanchez Engineering and CPR staff in attempt to have the preliminary design and cost estimate completed by the beginning of May 2012, following which a Request for Proposals will be issued for the detailed design and construction of the walkway.
If the City receives formal approval from the CPR to construct the walkway, and the cost is within budget, the goal will be to begin construction in the fall of this year.

The execution of this project is a top priority for the City of Peterborough.

The race committee is currently looking for cyclists to volunteer for the race in the following capacity…

One cyclist to be the pacer for the kids 1k event – race starts at 12:05pm ….and for the 5k event – race starts at 12:50pm…
Start/finish line is located in front of the YMCA ( Aylmer St. ). The course starts at the YMCA, goes north on Aylmer St to Perry Street to Crescent St, down and back on Ware and then to Edwards , where the route heads back on Crescent to Perry and Aylmer St…
The 1k route is north on Aylmer to Perry ( half way down) and then turning around to go back to the finish line…

1 or 2 cyclists are also needed as a route support people, patrolling the hot spots of the course, where we need the most help ( Armour Rd at Douro to Parkhill) and (Armour Rd from Parkhill to Francis Stewart )
We will have a lead police vehicle setting the course, but advance warning to our volunteers that the racers are approaching can help prepare them for stopping traffic in those areas.
